Two weeks ago, we attended a wedding in Detroit, Michigan, and had one of the best days ever.
Here is a list of my top 5 recommendations for a short stay in the Motor City
1) Eastern Market:
On a Saturday, this is the place to be. It’s like a farmer’s market on steroids. You can eat, shop, and pretend you’re a hipster foodie for a few hours. But remember, it’s only cool if you go on a Saturday.
2) Belle Isle:
A visit to Belle Isle is like being transported to a tropical paradise. Palms, gardens, and a giant fountain make this a must-see. Park the rental car and take a stroll to the edge of the water. You’ll notice Canada is less than 100 yards away. All that’s stopping you from unlimited maple syrup and compliments is a quick swim.
3) Riverfront Walk:
The riverfront walkway is dotted with parks, benches, and public art installations, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll or a peaceful escape from the urban hustle. If you still feel like doing a little sight seeing – hop on the “People Mover” which is Detroit’s version of Chicago’s L-train. For $0.75, you can loop around the city in 15 minutes. Hop off at the Greektown Station and head to Astoria Pastry shop for the best cinnamon roll of your life.
4) Prime and Proper:
Feeling fancy? Head to Prime and Proper, where you can dine on gourmet steaks and sip cocktails like you’re the classiest person in the Midwest. I recommend the New York Strip and a side of hashbrowns. It’ll run you about $200 a person with drinks, but who needs a retirement fund with a mouth full of dry aged ribeye?
5) Bar Hopping:
Detroit’s nightlife is world-famous. If you want the best of it, follow this guide: Start the night around 8pm at Standby, a dimly lit speakeasy in the heart of downtown. Order the $12 Green Hawaii and ask the bartender about their childhood. Wander over to the Brakeman, use money to purchase a token, use the token to purchase a beer, then play an intense game of foosball. So intense people around you begin to ask who you play for, and you begin to ask who the hell plays foosball professionally. Lastly, walk over to SPKRBOX, a tiny techno bar in Capitol Park. Situated directly underneath a parking garage, you’ll pay the cover, eagerly hop down a set of stairs and be greeted by a thumping, low-ceilinged club that offers the perfect intimate, non-judgemental setting for your wildest dance moves.
Entrance to Standby
Detroit is a city making a comeback. Hidden bars, delicious food, and the proximity to both water and nature are giving this metropolis a vibrant rebirth. The spots I’ve just recommended are sure to provide you with a perfect day in Detroit.
You heard it here first: the car city is on the come up.
